Mujeeb Jaihoon urges students to find passions beyond academics, stressing their importance for a life enriched with purpose and fulfillment.

The Poetry of Purpose: Sustaining the Spark beyond Academics

Today, I’d like to initiate a discussion concerning our post-tenth grade aspirations. Perhaps an illustrative analogy can be drawn by considering the act of acquiring a book. The scientific realm provides an explanation for the printing process, akin to the hardware of the book itself. Conversely, the humanities and arts function as software, shaping the content and meaning. Just as a phone grants access to various applications – Netflix, social media, or even cricket matches – these represent the software aspects. Similarly, the humanities and arts encompass how we utilize this technology; the nature of our online interactions, the content we consume. These elements embody the humanistic dimension.

The concept of poetry transcends the realm of written verse. It encompasses any pursuit that ignites a spark of passion within us. For some, intellectual exploration through academic pursuits may evoke this poetic response. Conversely, others may find their creative expression through hobbies or recreational activities. This notion is even reflected in the philosophy of “WordPress,” a platform for website creation. Their motto, “coding is poetry,” highlights the inherent beauty and satisfaction that can be derived from the process of coding.

The influence of the arts and humanities permeates our daily lives, shaping the world around us. Consider the captivating narratives presented in cinema – a testament to the power of artistic expression. Similarly, the realm of athletics, while governed by physical prowess, is deeply intertwined with the human spirit. The dedication of young cricketers, enduring the burning sun and exertion, exemplifies the emotional investment we make in such pursuits. While devoid of a purely scientific basis, activities like movie watching or sports engagement fulfill a fundamental human need – the desire for connection, storytelling, and emotional resonance. These pursuits, often transcending logic, speak to the core of our humanity.

As you embark on your professional journeys, attaining positions that ignite your passion, it’s crucial to recognize that financial compensation, while necessary, is not the sole measure of success. The invaluable experiences gleaned from each career path hold far greater significance. Throughout your pursuits, never lose sight of the human element – a cornerstone of genuine fulfillment.

Consider the example of several successful leaders whose visionary leadership established their brands as a household name. Despite their iconic success, they did not rest on their laurels. They continue to push boundaries by venturing into other independent domains. This exemplifies the importance of continuous growth. While your admission to this esteemed institution provides a supportive environment, comfort zone should be avoided. Similarly, even if you achieve financial success in the future, it’s important to continue setting ambitious goals for the utilization of your resources.

At this critical stage in your development, it’s essential for your aspirations to evolve. My own passion for writing blossomed during this very period, and I could not have foreseen its profound impact on my life’s journey. While your primary focus lies in your academic pursuits, each of you possesses unique hobbies and dreams. Dedicating yourselves to the realization of these dreams will be a highly rewarding experience. Remember, the path to success is rarely without obstacles. Be prepared to exert effort, even sacrificing sleep at times.
